While many only think of Orlando as being a family destination for its fantastic attractions, the city is also a perfect place to live, work and play for young couples, active adults and retirees. Orlando is romantic, it’s fun, there are so many exciting things to see and do, and housing can be as affordable or as luxurious as you choose. Orlando is certainly a place where anyone can be a kid at heart, but still enjoy happening happy hours and other grown-up indulgences like fine dining, championship golf and tennis, late night club hopping, world-class shopping and pampered day spas. With so many activities to choose from, it’s easy to strike a balance between play and work.
For those moving here for work, a large part of the Orlando economy is involved in the tourist industry. In 2004, over 48 million visitors came to Orlando. The convention industry is also very popular as is the entertainment (film, television and electronic gaming) industry. The entertainment industry has been aided by the presence of Universal Studios, Disney-MGM Studios, Full Sail School, and other entertainment companies and schools. The area’s economy also includes industries such as manufacturing. Lockheed-Martin has a large manufacturing facility for missile systems, aeronautical craft and related high tech research. Since the 1970s, the region has also been a popular home base for many computer software and hardware firms, such as IBM and Oracle. Other large scale companies that have offices in the immediate area include AAA, SunTrust Bank, Hard Rock Café, Planet Hollywood, Northrup Grumman, Boeing, Raytheon Systems and General Dynamics.
Employment is abundant and because of the presence of so many leading companies in their respective industries, the local education system in Orlando is also very strong. Technology and aeronautical schools are in abundance with several offering night sessions for working adults. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the Florida Institute of Technology, and the International Academy of Design and Technology are three such university’s most closely located to Orlando. Traditional universities and colleges in the area include Troy University, University of Central Florida, Stetson University, Rollins College and Keiser College.
Living in the Thornton Park neighborhood enables residents to keep their finger on the pulse of the city. The neighborhood is far enough removed from the many tourist attractions that walking these friendly streets provides a much more down-to-earth, homely feel that residents find comforting. If you are looking for a great place to live in Orlando, look no further than the downtown district and discover for yourself why the Thornton Park neighborhood is so highly regarded amongst homeowners and visitors alike.
